STRAW MARQUETRY FINISH
Straw marquetry is a traditional French decorative art finish. Artisans flatten rye straw and apply it edge-to-edge by hand. This creates shimmering patterns on furniture and walls. Light and movement change the appearance constantly. As you walk past, the shimmer shifts. Throughout the day, the surface transforms. Never the same twice.

HISTORY OF STRAW MARQUETRY
The technique originated in the Far East. It arrived in Europe during the 17th century. The craft nearly disappeared until the 1920s Art Deco movement. Jean-Michel Frank and André Groult revived it in Paris. Jean Royère used it extensively after World War II. Today, specialized French artisans continue this heritage.
PATTERNS AND LIGHT EFFECTS
The most basic pattern is straight straw. Artisans align each piece perfectly parallel, either vertically or horizontally. This creates clean, contemporary lines. From this foundation, classic patterns emerge: soleil (sunburst), éventail (fan), damier (checkerboard). Contemporary artisans create geometric abstractions, gradients, custom motifs. Some specialize in Art Deco revival. Others push into abstract modern designs.
THE TECHNIQUE AND MATERIAL
The straw comes from Burgundy, France. Specialized farmers grow rye specifically for marquetry. Hand-harvested before grain formation. This produces long, strong stems.
Artisans can use the straw in its natural golden color or dye it. Natural tones range from pale wheat to deep amber. Some artisans now create dyes from natural pigments to achieve colors from soft pastels to deep dark blue.
Artisans cut rye straw stems lengthwise and open them flat. They flatten each piece with a bone folder. They cut precise shapes with a scalpel. They glue each piece edge-to-edge onto the substrate. Wood, MDF, metal, even glass.
All work is entirely by hand. No machines. No power tools. Traditional tools only: bone folder, scalpel, brush, water-based glue. The quietest craft practice.
The natural silica coating creates shimmer and waterproof properties. No varnish needed.
STRAW MARQUETRY FURNITURE
French artisans apply straw marquetry to furniture and decorative objects. The finish transforms simple forms into statement pieces. Clients often discover the technique in Hermès, Chaumet, and Cartier boutiques worldwide. The shimmer captivates them. They want it for their homes. We connect them to the makers to create spectacular pieces for their private residences.

WORKING WITH STUDIO ZIRICOTE ON STRAW MARQUETRY PROJECTS
We start by understanding your project. Multiple factors determine the right artisan for your needs.
Do you need a simple panel inset into a single furniture piece? Do you need large quantities for fifteen cabinet doors in a master dressing room? Do you want an intricate furniture creation with extensive straw marquetry details combined with other materials? Would you like to push creative boundaries beyond straight patterns?
Scale, complexity, timeline, and budget all guide our artisan selection. Some artisans work exclusively as straw marquetry specialists. They create panels that cabinet makers integrate into furniture. Other ateliers are master cabinet makers who mastered straw marquetry in-house. They control the entire furniture creation process. Some focus on traditional patterns. Others experiment with contemporary abstractions.
We match your vision to the right workshop. Then we manage the complete process from concept to installation.
